Learning is always more enjoyable if a playful methodology is applied. For this reason we propose a series of games to learn to read that can be played both at home and at school.

The idea is to arouse interest, curiosity and encourage children to start expressing their own ideas. All this through fun.

Learning to read is a process that involves several stages, which are mainly:

  • Pe-syllabic level. They learn to differentiate between letters and figures.
  • Syllabic level. Phonological awareness develops and they begin to associate sounds with graphics. In turn, you learn to read and write.

1. Letters with objects

We can start a dynamic in which the children point to different objects and, one by one, their names are indicated. It is important to emphasize that the names are very clear.

We can use the typical illustrated alphabets or we can use plasticine and make figures to mold the letters or objects whose names we want to teach them.

It is recommended to start with the vowels and, once they gain knowledge of these letters, continue with the consonants. You can use the method of forming letters with the body, you can use your legs to form the letter A, for example.

2. Clapping and words

By using clapping and sound when separating syllables from words. We will arouse children’s interest (and perhaps make them laugh a lot) by high- fiving each time we separate the syllables of a word. For example: Ca-za-dor, ca-ba-llo-, ar-bol, a-ma-ri-llo.

At the time of writing, we can clap each time we draw a line to separate the syllables, in this way, the fun will also be transferred to the paper.

4. Identification of vowels

For the identification of syllables , pairs or trios of words can be used, beginning with the same vowels. Like for example: water, air, sand, grandmother.

The goal is for the child to identify the words and learn the sound of the corresponding vowel. In the previous case, it would be a question of consolidating the learning of the letter A in different scenarios.

You can also use letters with figures, or by means of baskets, each one represented with a vowel, and if you can paint them it will be better.

For example the A with the yellow color, the E with the red color and so on. Use cards identified with the vowel letters such as for the letter A: water, plane, car, with the letter O: bear, ear, gold.

4. Assemble drawings

Put eight pictures in two vertical columns on a sheet of paper. In each one of them draw, on each side, figures that are related and that the child can unite by identifying each one of them.

The objective is to relate each word, for example on one side it is written: book, dog, bread and sofa, on the other side: house, pet, food and house. The child must unite: book-house, dog-pet, bread-food and sofa-house.

5. Use cards with syllables

This is another one of the most useful and enjoyable games to learn to read that exist. Take several cards and write different syllables as many as necessary. Ask the child to make words from each of the cards.

If you write for example the syllable PA, which word does he think can be formed from this syllable. In a container you can enter several syllables. For example: PA, RA, TO, EN, PO.

Instruct him to take a piece of paper from the container and invite him to say a word from that syllable.  For example: Duck.

6. Recognize letters

Since the child begins to learn the letters he must recognize them, it is suggested to pay special attention to certain letters that can cause confusion for the child, such as the letter b with p, b with d.

It is recommended to write them several times: bbbdbb b. The letter in the middle is different, therefore, it does not correspond to the letter B. At this point, ask the child to round the letter in the correct way so that it is: bbbbb b.

7. What word does the letter have

Another game to learn to read is to write the child several words and ask him to identify those that contain the letter A. This exercise can be represented by means of figures.

For example: banana, leaf, hand ear, bird. Also you can ask to color words containing the letter A.

So that in this way they begin to build a reading. The important thing is to intertwine the figures and the text, it is not about decoding symbols and it is not something mechanical, the important thing is to understand the message.

Let us remember that the purpose of these games to learn to read will be a tool to help them communicate, discover and function in the world.
